Edwin L. Blackman
I'm an architectural illustrator with a passion for bringing designs to life through art. My journey began at Pratt Institute, leading to work on historic buildings in Old Town Alexandria before I transitioned to freelance architectural rendering. Over 50 years, I've adapted from pen and ink to watercolor, embracing new technologies while steadfastly upholding the artistic integrity of hand-painted renderings. For clients who value the artistry in architectural visualization, I am at your service.

Adapting to Evolution, Preserving Artistry
Over the past five decades, the architectural world has undergone monumental transformations, and I've evolved alongside it. My early work relied on traditional methods like pen and ink and airbrush, influenced by masters such as Helmet Jacoby and Paul Rudolph. While I've witnessed the rise of the PC and revolutionary software that allows for 3D design (BIM) and 2D construction documents (CAD), my primary technique has transitioned to watercolor, a medium that allows for a unique artistic expression.
Despite the incredible advancements in digital tools, I firmly believe that a hand-painted rendering, executed with an artistic touch, possesses an enduring allure that computers simply cannot replicate—at least not yet. While digital applications are remarkable, they often lack the subtle nuances, the warmth, and the inherent artistry that a human hand can impart.
For those who cherish the art of architecture and seek a visual representation that goes beyond mere technical accuracy to capture the essence and emotion of a design, I am at your service. I blend a lifetime of architectural insight with a dedicated artistic practice, ready to bring your visions to life with a distinctive, timeless quality.
